Jo Ann Emerson’s jump puts spotlight on NRECA

Jo Ann Emerson’s surprise jump from Congress to the top spot at the  National Rural Electric Cooperative Association turned a spotlight on the group  best known as the lobby created to help get farms hooked up to the power  grid. While that Depression-era issue might seem quaint in today’s Washington, the  Missouri Republican will oversee an NRECA that now lobbies across a wide body of  policy, and its broad national support base has made it a force to be reckoned  with on regulatory and political issues. Hoosiers Power the World – 9/10/12

The latest update from Randy Price, Carroll White REMC CEO, in Hoja Blanco, Guatemala: Day 8 Prayer and briefing for the day.  Our day was spent at the highest and most remote spot that we’ve worked yet. We put up another several thousand feet of wire and hung a transformer. The local’s agility on these mountains is impressive. When four of them carried a transformer across and up the slope they went so fast that us flat landers had to work hard to keep up.

Hoosiers Power the World – 9/4/12

Sept. 1 – Crew #1 made it back to Indiana around midnight and were greeted at the airport by their loved ones.  While it was hard work everyone came back with a new appreciation for what they have. Crew #2 arrived in Guatemala around noon and Isaac wasn’t a problem for the flight.  Gayvin and Terry met them outside the airport.  The only way you can go in the airport in Guatemala is if you have a ticket. Gayvin and Terry took them to lunch and they were on their way. They made it half way to the worksite.  During the trip they listened to stories from Gayvin and Terry about what to expect and how they worked on the first two villages. Hoosiers Power the World – 8/29/12

  From Kankakee Valley REMC CEO Dennis Weiss:  We are ready to head home. The guys are tired, but excited to head home to their families. Materials were loaded and sent to third village. Emotions are starting to show up. All the guys have made some special friends here and we will miss these people. Thursday, the crews will head to Antigua for some much needed rest after 12 days of non-stop work.  They will enjoy a little sightseeing before heading to Guatemala City and the flight home on Saturday.  Crew #1 will arrive in Indy around 11:00 PM Saturday night. Carroll White CEO Randy Price will lead Crew #2 when they depart Indianapolis on September 1 at 7:00 AM.  This crew is anxious to hit the mountain and begin work on the next phase of the project in a village located near the top of the mountain.  This village … Continue reading

2012 RELITE Update

RELITE Retreat #3 - Thursday, August 23rd & Friday, August 24th Tipmont REMC at Battle Ground and Lafayette, Indiana By Kara Baker, Wabash Valley Power Association  Forty cooperative employees from across the state gathered in Lafayette, Indiana for two days to tackle yet another retreat for RELITE. This time our Pit Crew made up of Ryan Dant (Hoosier Energy), Kathy Harpek (Kankakee Valley REMC), Greg Filter (Boone REMC), Pam Gardner (Noble REMC), Dave Patterson (UDWI REMC) and Travis Smith (Tipmont REMC) was focusing on how the cooperative philosophy was built on commitment. Specifically, we spent a lot of time talking about our commitment to cooperative members through the use of proper leadership, ethics and technology.

Hoosiers Power the World Update – 8/24/12

From Gayvin Strantz, ISA staff member leading Hoosiers Power the World volunteer crews in Guatemala: Primary is done on first village, working on secondary.  Sunday –  We will be splitting crews and they will be going to next village.  They will work there all day Monday.  Tuesday –  NRECA International staff and boardmembers will host a ceremony for turning the lights on.  Wednesday –  crews will move all supplies etc, to the next village.  Thursday – everyone will head to Antigua. Friday – will tour Antigua and stay in Guatemala City.  Saturday – coming home!   We are half way there for group 1.  They all have something to be very proud of.  It is probably the hardest work they have ever done as a lineman. Hoosiers Power the World Update – 8/23/12

August 22nd – Gayvin Strantz called and reported that all is going well.  Lots of hard work going on there.  Everyone is safe and doing well. Additional news from Dennis Weiss, CEO, Kankakee Valley REMC:  We should have all the primary up on the first village tomorrow. We started on some secondary and services today. This group of guys are amazing, working in extremely challenging conditions and getting the job done.   Anyway, these guys are working their tails off and coming in at night joking and having fun. Hoosiers Power the World Update – 8/21/12

Pre-trip: August 17th – Crew #1 meet at ISA for a pre-trip briefing with Gayvin and Terry. Day 1: August 18th – Meet at ISA at 3:00 a.m. to drop off cars and shuttle took them to the airport.  Flew out of Indianapolis at 6:00 a.m., arrived in Guatemala at 11:25 a.m. their time. Had lunch at a restaurant right outside of airport and departed for Huehuetenango, arrived at hotel around 6:00 p.m. Day 2: August 19th – Breakfast, left for the mountain at 8:30 a.m., arrived at the base of the mountain safely. Day 3: August 20th – It was a day of organization with supplies and what their game plan   was going to be. Everyone is safe and taken care of.  They have been without power for two days. Odle Heads Back to D.C.

Dexter Odle of Linden, Ind., will represent Indiana on the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).  Odle will attend the YLC Conference, July 21-25, in Washington, D.C. The conference agenda includes leadership and team building exercises, meeting with Capitol Hill staff members who are alumni of NRECA’s Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, and a competition to select the NRECA’s National Youth Spokesperson. While in Washington, the YLC members will gain a broader understanding of cooperatives through discussions with Glenn English, CEO of NRECA, Sheldon Peterson, Governor of the National Rural Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC) and Bob Phillips, CEO of the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC).  Odle’s electric co-op experience began in June when he attended the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. with over 1,500 high school students from across the country who were sponsored by their local electric cooperative.  During the trip, Indiana Statewide Association … Continue reading

Donated Materials Head to Guatemala

Over $60,000 in donated materials and equipment were loaded on a semi-trailer on July 10 at the Hoosier Training Center.  Rolls of wire, crossarms, and other items – large and small – will eventually be placed on a cargo ship bound for Guatemala later this month.
